English to Dutch Translation Services

In our English-Dutch translations, we only use experienced, native Dutch translators, all of whom specialise in a number of different areas of Dutch translation to give the best possible results for our customers. Documents are proofread and formatted to suit each client’s individual needs, resulting in an excellent English to Dutch translation.

Dutch (Nederlands) is a European language spoken by about 22 million people, mainly in the Netherlands and Belgium. It plays an important role in the EU and European business markets.

Related to Dutch translation, our translation agency also provides translations for both English to Flemish and Flemish to English, and English to Afrikaans and Afrikaans to English.

Dutch to English Translation

Irrespective of whether your Dutch-English translation assignment is complex or basic, Rosetta Translation always has experienced Dutch translators on hand to deliver, with expertise in a number of areas, from technical computer jargon to legal terminology.

In order to gurantee the high quality of our translations, we obviously only use native English speakers with relevant Dutch translation qualifications for all Dutch to English translation assignments.

The High Rate of English Speakers and What This Means for Your Dutch Translation Services

English is a common second language for Dutch citizens with estimates being anywhere from 90-93% of the population having some kind of proficiency in the language, depending on the source. Why is the percentage so high? This is commonly accredited to international trade as well as the use of subtitles on international media rather than dubbing (which is common in other countries, such as France and Spain). Therefore, Dutch children are exposed to English from a very young age through TV, as well as through school where from the ages of 10 they are expected to learn English as part of their curriculum. A trend also has developed in the Netherlands to have courses themselves in higher education settings be taught in English, with more than 2,100 English-speaking courses offered at Dutch universities. This means overall there are a large amount of experienced and specialised translators who are native English and Dutch speakers, meaning you can be sure that your translation will be handled by an expert in the field with exceptional translation skills.

Trade and Translations

The UK imports more goods and services from the Netherlands than it exports, meaning the translation of documentation into English is important for uninterrupted trade between the two countries. The Netherlands was the UK’s 4th largest trading partner in 2021 accounting for 6.2% of total UK trade, with medicinal and pharmaceutical products being the goods most imported, amounting to £2.9 billion, and with business services being imported with a value of £36.6 billion in 2021 alone. This means that translations into, and out of, Dutch are a keystone in continuing this international exchange, making it a common translation pair that us at Rosetta Translation handle regularly.

Formatting and Translating into Dutch

When translating between English and Dutch, documents may need to be redesigned to accommodate Dutch’s long compound words. Also, text tends to expand when translated from English into Dutch, sometimes as much as 35%. This will mean that your translation into Dutch may be a bit longer than you were expecting (possibly over a third larger) and the inverse is also true, your English translation may appear smaller than your source Dutch. Don’t be alarmed if this is the case, you can remain confident that your text has been translated in its entirety when you trust your translation to Rosetta Translation.

My translation is for South Africa, so I just need Dutch, right?

A little bit of knowledge, without context, can sometimes be dangerous; many people know that South Africa was a former Dutch colony and therefore the funny sounding language we sometimes see in films must be some form of Dutch, right? Well, you’d be 90% right. Afrikaans, one of the two official languages of South Africa (the other being English) does indeed have its roots based mainly in Dutch with an estimated 90-95% of its vocabulary from the European language.

Due to these similarities, there is some mutual intelligibility between the two languages, with a person speaking Dutch arguably more likely to be able to understand the person speaking Afrikaans than vice versa, however you’re much safer in asking for your translation to be into Afrikaans should you have a South African audience for your translation; something we at Rosetta Translation can provide for you.
