How do the European and Brazilian variants relate to one another?

When making decisions about translations for a Portuguese-speaking audience, it is important to be clear about the differences between these two language variants.

Although mostly completely mutually intelligible – especially in writing – there are various differences between the variants, easily spotted by speakers of each of them. Sentence structure, spelling, terminology and even the way of addressing your audience all are different.

The country your audience is based in is a good clue for what variant you might need. Brazil and Portugal speak, respectively, the Brazilian and European variants. For African territories where Portuguese is an official language, the European variant is the norm for official documents.

Due to the number of territories where Portuguese is spoken, there are dozens of Portuguese dialects – these are however mostly distinct in spoken language. For your written translations therefore, the choice should be between the Brazilian and European variants.

What are some of the differences between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese?

The two variants have many differences, the most identifiable probably being spelling and form of treatment.

Even though there is a Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement of 1990, there are still a great number of words with different spellings in both variants. For many words, both the old Brazilian and European variant spellings are still accepted.

The form of treatment is the easiest way to spot each variant. For European Portuguese, there is a set difference between the informal (você) and formal (tu) you, which does not exist in the Brazilian variant. In fact, “você”, the formal you in European Portuguese, is widely used as an informal you in Brazilian Portuguese. This discrepancy is especially relevant when addressing your audience in marketing materials.

There are also considerable differences in vocabulary. The degree of this difference varies according to the subject area, and even in more technical areas – where you could expect a bigger homogeneity – there are significant variations.

Beyond this, there are differences in gender, figures of speech, sentence structure, etc.

Can I adapt my existing Portuguese translation into another variant?

Absolutely. If you wish to have your text –  either Brazilian or European Portuguese – adapted to the other variant, we will have a specialized native linguist localise it to guarantee the best comprehension and treatment of your target audience.
